Perhaps one game wasn’t enough to judge Victor Wimpanyama, the San Antonio Spurs’ top seed.
After a less than stellar appearance in the Summer League earlier in the week, Wimpanyama silenced the critics in his second Sunday appearance against the Portland Trail Blazers.
Wimpanyama showed off his insane skill set all night, wowing the crowd with domination of the break, under the boards and in space.
The 7-foot-4 big man finished with a career-high 27 points, shooting 64% from the field (9-of-14) and 50% from three (2-of-4). Meanwhile, Wimpanyama pulled down 12 rebounds, including eight on defensive end, while adding three blocks.
After Wembanyama’s big night, Tottenham boss Matt Nielsen said the 19-year-old showed “a little bit of confidence” on Sunday after making a difficult debut. Nielsen admitted Wimpanyama may have been fighting himself on Friday but he noticed the difference against the Trail Blazers.
“He’s a skilled basketball player who works it out,” Nielsen said via. Duane Rankin from azcentral.com.
After Wimpanyama scored just nine points on Friday against the Charlotte Hornets, pundits quickly emerged to question the hype surrounding the spurs’ great French hope.
However, after his return on Sunday, those looking for another chance to analyze Wimpanyama will likely have to wait until the start of the season.
Nielsen told reporters he was not sure if Wimbanyama would play another summer league game and the 19-year-old appeared to be looking forward to training camp. After a few months of madness, Wimpanyama said he was going to “go away” for a while.
