Fresh from being eliminated in the playoffs, the Golden State Warriors are rumored to have received strong interest around the league for a surprise player.
The Golden State Warriors never came to repeat as NBA champions, as they were defeated in six games by the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Semifinals. As their season winds down, there is uncertainty as to the composition of the roster, with Draymond Green and Jordan Poole largely being called into question. There’s also the latest report by Shams Al Sharaniya from The Athletic that Team and President of Basketball Operations Bob Myers has had “There have been no substantive talks about extending the contract for months.” And that division may be on the horizon.
There’s a new nugget coming out of the NBA lottery this past weekend about a player currently under contract with the Warriors.
ESPN’s Zach Lowe mentioned it in his recent article (subscription required) Of his conversations, “There continues to be a strong level of interest in Jonathan Cuminga throughout the league.”
It was rumored that the Warriors are getting interest in Jonathan Cuminga
In the 2021 NBA Draft, the Warriors had two first-round picks after finishing the previous season with a 39-33 record. Kuminga was named the seventh pick after playing one year with the NBA G League Ignite.
Cumminga was mostly an off the bench option for Golden State during his first two seasons in the league. Although his numbers have increased this past season, he has rarely been used in the playoffs. Specifically, he averaged 20.8 minutes per game in the regular season, while he averaged just 6.1 minutes in the playoffs.
According to The Athletic’s Anthony Slater and CharaniaThe Warriors and Cuminga representatives are willing to talk about his future, and if the team doesn’t plan on using him in a full-time role, he’ll want to be traded to a team that will give him that opportunity.
In the regular season, Kuminga averaged 9.9 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.9 assists while posting a 52.5 field goal percentage. As for the playoffs, he averaged 3.4 points, 0.9 rebounds, and 0.5 assists while shooting 54.2 percent from the field.
The Warriors will be the team to follow this season, especially as they try to maintain their spot as a playoff contender. With all the questions, we can add another question regarding Kuminga’s future with the team.
