After a strong start in free agency, it looks like the Los Angeles Lakers aren’t quite finished improving their roster. Although most of the best free agents have been collected or are outside the Lakers’ price range, there are a couple Has been reported to have an interest in.
Most interesting, by far, is quarterback Christian Wood, who last played for the Dallas Mavericks and seems unlikely to return there next season. Plus, with free agency funds drying up, it seems unlikely he’ll win a major long-term deal.
Alternatively, he could be forced to sign a one-year veteran contract in hopes of raising his value next summer. Another option could be Bismak Biombo, who last played for the Phoenix Suns and is a respected backup big man who can both defense and rebound.
Could the Lakers land any players?
If Wood sees the writing on the wall, a one-year deal with a competitor might make more sense for him. Moreover, if that happens, the Lakers, along with the Miami Heat, and the Phoenix Suns might be the perfect fit for him. While every contender can offer them ample playing time, the Lakers have a greater need in the frontcourt, even with Jared Vanderbilt and Anthony Davis.
They could use a backup position, especially a talented center like Wood, who has established himself as one of the best offensive big men in the NBA. With only Jaxson Hayes currently in the backup position, LA could definitely use him, especially with Davis’ health always being a question mark.
If the Lakers hit Wood in some way, Piombo will be a good backup plan even though he’s not quite the offensive player like Wood. However, with the reloaded roster, they could look to play smaller, allowing for more offense and reducing the need for a senior player who can score, although that would be nice.
In the end, the Lakers already had great success overseas. However, Wood’s addition could help them return to the Western Conference Finals next season.
