The current players voted on the winner from a list of 12 finalists. The finalists are determined by a panel of league executives.
Michal Bridges of Brooklyn finished second, and Stephen Curry of Golden State came third in the voting. The other finalists, in order of finish, are New York’s Derrick Rose, Miami’s Audonis Haslem, Portland’s Damien Lillard, Sacramento’s Harrison Barnes, Sacramento’s Damion Lee, Phoenix’s Darius Garland, Cleveland’s Grant Williams and Boston’s Jaren Jackson Jr. , and Aaron Gordon from Denver.
Lillard won the award in 2021, the only time in the last four seasons he hasn’t gone on vacation. Holiday won the award as a member of the New Orleans Pelicans in 2020 before earning it again with the Bucks for his last two seasons.
The award is named after Jack Twyman and Maurice Stokes, who were teammates of the Cincinnati Royals from 1955 to 1958. Stokes suffered an injury during the 1957-58 season that left him in a coma, permanently paralyzed and diagnosed with post-traumatic encephalopathy, an injury to the brain . Twiman became his legal guardian and attorney.
