It’s only been a few days since Victor Wimpanyama was officially named first overall by the San Antonio Spurs, but a viral tweet about his future by the Clutch Points has raised eyebrows. The now-deleted (but retweeted by Air Alamo) tweet heavily suggests Wimpanyama will one day play for the Lakers, given their long history of attracting top class men. take a look.
A viral tweet mocked Wimpanyama joining the Lakers at the expense of the Spurs.
Needless to say, it’s too early to start rumors Wembanyama moved to Los Angeles even before his first major league summer game. Especially with Tottenham soon to get him on a contract for at least four years, and up to nine, before he becomes an unrestricted free agent. This is a result of how beginner trades and subsequent bullish max extensions are structured.
Of course, it’s true that Los Angeles was able to trade for Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Dwight Howard, and Anthony Davis, as well as sign Shaquille O’Neal away from the Orlando Magic. And each of them could be said to have been the best big man in the league at the time, something Wimpanyama can expect in the near future.
However, even if he had a falling out with the Spurs, they certainly wouldn’t trade him to the Lakers, given that they were once rivals. Remember when Kawhi Leonard once wanted to be traded to the Lakers or Clippers but instead got traded to the Toronto Raptors?
This also ignores the fact that San Antonio has a poor track record of holding on to its superstars. Hall of Famers David Robinson, Tim Duncan, and Manu Ginobili have spent their entire careers with the team, while fellow Hall of Famer Tony Parker has only spent 18 seasons there. Tottenham fans were quick to point out the flaws in the original post.
Never say no, but it may be years until a Wembanyama becomes available, if at all. Either way, he probably won’t be a Laker anytime soon.
