allbirds
when i heard allbirds I was going out with golf shoes, I thought it was too good to be true.
As the owner of four different brands of shoes already, I knew I had to try the company’s first foray into the golf industry.
In case you weren’t familiar with Allbirds yet, the company started in 2016 as a direct-to-consumer eco-based shoe brand with an initial wool runner. The company now offers 29 different styles of wool, eucalyptus (tree) and sugarcane fibres, available at their website And in Allbirds stores across the country.
When I was in college, people specifically bought Allbirds to stand for 48 hours straight during our school’s dance marathon.
The brand’s original wool runners are the most popular and, as far as I’ve noticed, the top choice of many tournament golf journalists (even some GOLF employees). One of my pairs is a derivative of the runner called the Runner-Up Mizzle, which is a high-top, waterproof version. This is the shoe I thought would help them become a golf shoe company, but also hurt them.
Allbirds depend on their comfort and sustainability. I’ve hit balls in my rank, and while they’re some of the most comfortable and warm shoes I’ve owned, I can feel that they’re not as stable as a running shoe or even a golf shoe on my swing (moral of the story: golf shoes help).
The company ended up taking their newest running shoe, the Dasher, as the base for their new Golf Dasher. While this is one of the few styles I haven’t tried, based on my experience with golf shoes I was sure I would love it.
Here’s my review of the shoe, looking at five factors; Stability, traction, comfort/fit, the elements, and style.
stability
I first noticed that the Golf Dasher has a bit more outsole than the shoe, the way it provides more support and stability during the golf swing than in a runner’s style. Unlike when I hit balls in opponents, I don’t feel like my feet are moving side to side and allow me to generate power like a normal golf shoe.
This is probably the biggest concern for a company that makes a golf shoe considering their other products, but they’ve done a great job adapting to a golfer’s needs.
popularity
I haven’t worn shoes with soft spikes since Kindergarten, so wearing shoes without spikes is my favorite. The Golf Dasher’s rubber lugs on the heel and toe do not yet allow it to slip, either on the track or on the driving range mat. I’ve owned so many shoes from well-known brands that I can’t say the same about them.
comfort fit
The shoe has no tongue and can be slipped on and off quite easily. They come with a fairly thick castor oil-based foam insole, which has been an issue for me since I wear orthotics. I fixed it once I replaced it with a thinner sole purchased on Amazon, which is definitely something to note if you normally wear custom soles.
Otherwise, once I pop the footbeds in, the shoes fit like a glove. They come in half sizes, like most of the company’s active sneakers, but they don’t come in sizes that are too wide or narrow. Allbirds suggests going up a half or full size for wider feet. I wear a size 11, and it was a perfect size for me.
The construction includes ZQ merino wool (wool is a signature kind of Allbirds) which makes them extremely comfortable and breathable. It also allows you to clean them by throwing them in the washing machine, which is a staple on most Allbirds shoes.
items
I haven’t tested the shoe in the rain, but I honestly don’t plan to because I don’t think that’s what they’re made for. Golf Dashers have a bio-based PU mudguard, but they are not waterproof. For that reason, these shouldn’t be your only pair of golf shoes, but they should keep you dry with the morning dew.
Personally, I would use these shoes for range sessions and nine-hole tours when I simply want to take it easy and stay comfortable.
style
The shoe comes in natural black and natural white, both of which have a white outsole and then the upper in either black or beige. They both look amazing and should go with just about any outfit (disclaimer: I’m no style expert, so figure out the last part for yourself, though I’m pretty sure I’m right).
Even though this shoe is new to the company, it still retains a good amount of its typical look with double shaped eyelets and thick laces.
Bonus: You can also rest assured, Allbirds is a carbon-neutral company and Golf Dasher has a carbon footprint of just 6.88 CO2e.
