Canelo Alvarez has had some surprising opposition changes and will now face Jermel Charlo in September.
The newly minted Mexican star is making a comeback opposite John Ryder in May. That match was a comeback for Canelo Alvarez in more ways than one, as it was his first match in Mexico in over a decade. In front of his home crowd, the middleweight champion did not disappoint, defeating “the gorilla” by decision.
After the victory, Canelo called Alvarez a rematch with Dmitry Bivol. The two previously faced off this past May, with the lightweight champ scoring an upset win. With this in mind, Dmitry Bivol refused to rematch, especially after his opponent’s team refused to lift his briefcase in the rematch.
With that in mind, Canelo Alvarez had to go looking for an opponent, and he found one in Jermel Charlo. Earlier today, the Mexican superstar announced the fight would continue Social media. The event will take place on September 30 in Las Vegas, the venue has not yet been announced.

However, it will be Canelo Alvarez’s first fight as a member of Al Haymon’s Peacebuilding Committee. Earlier this month, the middleweight champion signed with the promotion to a three-way deal, worth $100 million. In the first fight on this deal, Jermel will take on Charlo later this year.
Funnily enough, this wasn’t the fight many fans were expecting. Instead, it was Jermal Charlo who was expected to face Canelo Alvarez for the first time. However, with Hitman out of the ring for over two years, the nod appears to have gone to his brother. For his part, Jermel Charlo holds all the gold in the light middleweight division, last knocking out Brian Castano in May.
