The San Antonio Spurs were the biggest winners of the NBA lottery and will now pick June 22. San Antonio landed the number one spot in this year’s draft to turn out to be an amazing turnaround that has gone under the radar. This is after the Spurs amassed one of the largest picking stocks in the NBA in just two seasons. However, they won’t have to use it to try to draft a superstar or trade one because they’ll be able to pick a potential Wembanyama superstar.
Tottenham wisely bet on that outcome last summer when they decided to back off. After winning 35 games last season, they elected to trade All-Star Dejounte Murray to Atlanta for three first-round draft picks and a pick-swap. Not only did this deal look like a home run for Tottenham, it also cleared the way for them. Now they have the chance to craft the next big thing.
Tottenham is the perfect choice for Victor Wimpanyama.
Despite having the second-worst record in the NBA, Wimpanyama will join a surprisingly promising roster of youngsters. Keldon Johnson And Devin FasselThe two best players on the squad, aged just 23 and 22 respectively, have both managed to raise the bar this season. Johnson’s scoring jumped from 17 to 22 points per game, while Vassell jumped from 12.3 to 18.5 points per game.
Trey Jones, an upcoming free agent and former second-round draft pick, proved to be a capable player and provided the Spurs with some much-needed playmaking after Murray was traded. Meanwhile, the team selected three players in the first round of the 2022 draft: Jeremy Suchan, Malachy Branham, and Blake Wesley, and each proved worthy of selection.
Southan provided immediate assistance to Spurs in the force forward, their weakest position; Branham had a strong secondary half of the season, including an average of nearly 17 points per game in February. In addition, Wesley showed flashes as a quick, tall and cunning reserve guard.
While all of the aforementioned players have a lot of potential, none of them expect to be superstars, which is why San Antonio is the perfect location for Mbanyama. After all, they have a solid starting point in Jones, two high-scoring wingers in Vasil and Johnson, and four in Suchan. Each player can help make Wembanyama’s transition to the NBA a smoother one, and in turn can help them get easy baskets by drawing double teams.
Overall, Tottenham have quietly assembled a roster of talented youngsters that would benefit greatly from Wimpanyama and vice versa. Better yet, they still have a treasure trove of picks to use to build around him, proving they are the best team for him.
