No NBA fanbase is happier about the direction of their franchise right now than the San Antonio Spurs, which recently selected French star Victor Wimpanyama with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.
Wimpanyama has been the top pick in this year’s draft for some time, with everyone believing he would be an instant star in the league and a player who could instantly turn the franchise around.
Many believe Wimpanyama is the best prospect in the NBA since LeBron James in 2003, which would be hard to commit, but the Spurs are confident he can do it.
Besides celebrating Wimpanyama’s arrival, Spurs fans can also celebrate the past today, with it being the anniversary of the team’s first title with Tim Duncan and David Robinson driving in San Antonio via StatMuse.
24 years ago, Tim Duncan and David Robinson won their first NBA Finals in just 5 games:

It was the first of five titles the Spurs have won with Duncan as the face of the franchise, who was recently inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame for his accomplishments at San Antonio.
With Duncan given a blueprint for how to consistently win championships and lead a team for nearly two decades, Wimpanyama will try to follow in his footsteps and he’ll be able to do so with the help of Gregg Popovich along the way.
Although Popovich said years ago that he would leave into the sunset with Duncan, the legendary coach is still doing his thing in San Antonio and seems excited about the future with Wimpanyama ready to be the next star in the league.
