A soccer match between Indonesia and Thailand at the Southeast Asian Games (SEA) has turned into an all-out Muay Thai brawl.
Held in the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, the two teams went back and forth in an entertaining contest that was eventually decided in overtime. In the end, Indonesia came away with a win and got their first win sea games Football medal at 32, but not before getting involved in a massive scuffle with an opponent which you can see below:
Thailand qualifies against Indonesia in the final of the SEA Games soccer
Indonesia entered the 90th minute of the competition with a 2-1 lead until substitute Yutsakorn Burava scored the equalizing goal for Thailand. Two minutes into extra time, Indonesia hit back, retaking the lead thanks to a mistake from Thai defender Somchai Thongcham. Moments later, a major brawl broke out as players and coaches stormed the pitch. Security personnel rushed to the square in an attempt to put an end to the unnecessary violence. It was several minutes before things finally calmed down, allowing the match to continue.
The referees distributed five red cards, three of which went to the coaches of both teams. Thai goalkeeper Suponvit received a red card after running the length of the field for throwing hands with a member of the opposing team. Indonesian defender Komang Trisanda also received a red card for his part in the fight.
In the end, Indonesia came out with a 5-2 victory, scoring three goals during the extra period. After the event, Indonesia coach Indra Syafri said:I regret that friends from both Thailand and our team [had a fight], but it’s over. We have already hugged and forgiven each other. This is football.“
