PORTLAND, Maine — A diverse group of Mariners found the scorecard Saturday night, with seven different players scoring and scoring seven multiple points, as Maine defeated the Norfolk Admirals, 7-2. Opening “Fan Appreciation Weekend” in front of a crowd of more than 4,400 at Cross Insurance Arena, the Mariners picked 41street season victory.
The Mariners wasted little time starting the scoring when Reed Stefansson found the net only: 30 in the match. Great puck movement from Andrew Pesci to Tyler Hennam to Stefansson in the slot would set the tone for this period. About halfway through the period, Grant Gabriel buried a nice cross from Nick Master at 10:33 to make it 2-0. Less than two minutes later, with the Mariners down, Alex Keel chipped in with a shot off the crossbar and behind Cal Morris to extend the lead to 3-0. Michael DiPietro was also busy in this period, as he faced 12 of the Norfolk Admirals’ shots, stopping all of them.
The only goal of the second period came from Norfolk’s Danny Katich, when Darrick’s blue line pass Louis Ginn shot past DiPietro at 12:46. It was another grueling period for Dipietro, as he saw an additional 15 shots from the Admiral. The Mariners went 3-1 in the third.
The Mariners came in at third and quickly built their lead. Matt Phillipe scored his first Mariners goal at 1:42 when he tipped Connor Doherty’s shot wide. Austin Albrecht added less than a minute later when Nick Master whipped his pass onto the tailgate. At 6:11 of the period, the lead was brought up to 6-1 on an Andrew Pesci shot from the blue line that deflected off the Admirals’ blockers. Matthew Roy got Norfolk’s second goal at 13:32, but that was answered by Alex-Olivier Voyer’s garbage clean at 14:22 to bring the game up to the final score 7-2.
DiPietro got his 19thy He won with 35 saves, while Morris stopped in 22 of 29. The Mariners are now awaiting the outcome of the Newfoundland/Reading match-up to see if their search for home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs continues through tomorrow.
