Duncan Robinson taunted TD Garden late in Miami’s win in Game 7. What set him off? group chat
Robinson had 10 points in Miami’s upset victory, but his affection didn’t just come from Miami’s impending elimination of the Celtics.
As he told JJ Redick “The Old Man and the Three” Podcast, Robinson, who grew up in New Hampshire, added to a Celtics group chat after Game 6. And those fans mocked him mercilessly.
“I don’t know how this happened,” Robinson told Reddick, speculating that it might be someone he knew from high school. “My number was put into a huge group chat. So after we lose Game 6, my phone explodes with all these random New England numbers.”
Robinson said he’s been receiving barbs and even pictures of Curt Schilling’s bloody sock — ever since the Red Sox came back from losing 3-0 in the 2004 ALCS. He was also “in his feelings” after a “shattering loss” in the sixth game, where Derrick White scored with a touchdown run. 0.1 seconds to win.
He also lamented his error down the stretch, one of which was almost impossibly wide open.
So Robinson decided in advance that he would party if he had the chance. Pick a classic wrestling celebration – Hulk Hogan’s classic “I Can’t Hear You” ear.
Robinson’s problem was that he wasn’t sure he would win in celebration.
“I wanted to do that,” Robinson explained. “But I have to be relevant enough in the game to warrant that.” “Ideally you get to 20+ and then you do that. For my 10th point layup? Not really what I envisioned.”
He may not have dominated as much as he wanted in Game 7, but Robinson was a solid contributor. He had two snaps and a block, and Miami edged Boston by 17 points in the 20 minutes he was on the floor.
Now with the Heat heading to Denver for Game 1 of the Finals Thursday night, the organization knows what they need to do to get a great performance out of Robinson: Leak his phone number to a Nuggets group chat.
