Rob Font is looking to continue riding his momentum at UFC 292.
The streak (20-6 MMA, 10-5 UFC) picked up a two-fight skid with a First Round Night TKO performance of rising star Adrian Yanez in April at UFC 287.
Draws the line Song Yadong (20-7-1 MMA, 9-2-1 UFC) on Aug. 19 at TD Garden in Boston. Font, a native of Massachusetts, would like to fight a higher-ranked opponent and knew he would likely have to finish off Yadong if he wanted to climb the bantamweight ladder.
“Obviously the win is huge, but I have to come back to this finish to make people want to see me more than anyone else,” Font told MMA Radio Junkee. “I think if I could get out there and have a great knockout, a great finish or even just an impressive fight, I think — I’d be consistent with two finishes — I’d be in that conversation. It’s annoying that I’m fighting backwards. It brings me closer, but it’s not “.
Font was the betting underdog heading into his battle with Yanez, who is yet to lose in the Octagon. The 36-year-old was happy to silence the doubters with his quick finish.
“They were building it, and everyone was talking about it,” Font said. “He would even talk about fighting Sean O’Malley at the press conference or at the media day instead of just plain talking about our fight. It just felt a little disrespectful, but it comes with the territory.
“You lose two in a row, you sit out a year, and people forget. Then I had to go out there and remind them. I felt like my team and I had a secret that nobody knew. I was the betting underdog, and everyone was suspicious of me, and I just had to go out there and not just Winning but making a statement.”
