We’ve seen professionals take the ups and downs of a referral with one hand. We’ve seen them take shots around training a green with one hand.
But it’s hard to remember when we saw a pro break the chop with one hand in an actual tournament.
That is until Saturday.
During the second round of the Insperity Invitational of the PGA Tour Champions, Wes Short Jr. faced off against a rival. A downhill chip after hitting it over the par 3 14th green. It appeared to be a straight forward chip as Short handled the ball with only his left hand on the club.
His right palm remained flat on his right quadruple.
“Going with one hand?” yelled the bemused playboy Bob Papa into the Golf Channel.
The shortstop slid his wedge just below the ball, popped it into the front of the green and watched it check and roll just a few feet from the hole. Short simply put his club back in the box and held his putter as normal.
“That tells me the guy has the French fries,” added analyst Lani Wadkins. “If you’re walking with one hand or cross-legged, you’ll have problems with normal gripping with your hands.”
We’ve seen US Open winner Matt Fitzpatrick pull off his cross-handed chopping style from 30 yards, but taking one hand off the club feels like a whole other level. the PGA Tour Champions social media team Meet the short Sunday morning and getting his right hand off the shot turned out to be the goal.
“I think my right hand caused some problems,” said Short. “If he’s not in the club, he can’t cause any problems.
“I was trying to put myself back in two [hands]But I had a lot of trouble yesterday so I came back to the last holes with one hand.”
Short’s team started Saturday tied for the sixth but had teams in the ninth and 13th, sweeping a four-and-out. The up and down boat 14 leveled the ship and managed to make two volleys on her last three holes to shoot the 77.
