The San Antonio Spurs have been sleepy for the past few years, but it looks like the happy days will soon be back for them.
They won the NBA lottery, giving them the first pick and the chance to draft 7-foot-3 French genius Victor Wimpanyama, who many feel has great star potential.
This was the equivalent of a $500 million Powerball jackpot, but it was just one part of what has so far been a great summer for the Spurs organization, as highlighted by Front Office Sports.
This summer, the San Antonio Spurs have:
▪️ Won the NBA lottery
▪️ 2,500 season tickets sold per day
▪️ Coined by Victor Wimpanyama
▪️ Put the finishing touches on a $550 million HQ
▪️ Gregg Popovich – the winningest NBA coach of all time – signed a 5-year contract pic.twitter.com/E5A95E7Otm– Sports Front Office (FOS) July 8, 2023
Immediately after winning the draft lottery, the Spurs received 2,500 deposits for season tickets in less than 24 hours, which meant an influx of capital for the franchise.
The team will also open a new headquarters for basketball operations later this summer, and the facility will reportedly include a motion capture lab, hydrotherapy pools, and a sensory deprivation tank, according to axios.com.
In addition, head coach and CEO Gregg Popovich got a very lucrative five-year contract extension, despite turning 74.
Despite all this optimism and activity, it’s important to remember that it will take time for Tottenham to be a championship-caliber team again.
Wimpanyama didn’t look quite as good in his first Summer League game and seemed like he had a lot of work to do not only with his offensive game but also with his physicality and general strength.
They also have to build a solid cast around him, which is something a lot of teams can never do when they have a legitimate superhero.
But if there is one organization that can do it, it’s Tottenham.
