the athlete‘s Pierre Lebrun reports He believes the Washington Capitals have already reached out to the Toronto Maple Leafs for permission to interview former Hershey Bears coach Spencer Carberry. But he added that neither team would confirm to him on Tuesday.
Now that the Maple Leafs are out of the playoffs, there is no doubt that teams will reach out about Toronto assistant coach Spencer Carberry, and I believe The Capitals, his old organization, have already asked permission to interview him for their vacant head coach position. Neither organization confirmed that Tuesday.” I mentioned LeBron.
Carberry was ready to move to Washington (as we wrote here), was named the ECHL Coach of the Year (2014) and was named AHL Coach of the Year for the 2020-21 season in May 2021.
Carberry signed a three-year extension with the Washington Capitals to remain coach of the Bears on April 22, 2021, before the Toronto Maple Leafs swooped in and hired him as an assistant coach two months later.
Carbery was named Bears head coach on June 26, 2018, and led the club to a three-year record of 104-50-9-8, good for 658 points, including a mark of 53-18-3-2 (111 points, 730) in the last 76 regular season games.
According to ESPNCarbery is still highly regarded in the Caps organization. Washington wanted to keep him before the Maple Leafs signed him.
LeBron also said that the Capitals have already held other interviews for the vacant head coach position, but did not specify who the interviewees were.
“We previously reported the Caps’ interest in Lightning assistant coach Jeff Halpern. I’m told the Captain has interviewed other coaching candidates, so this isn’t a two-person field.” LeBron added.
The Labron reported on May 3 that the Capitals are expected to interview former Tampa Bay Lightning assistant coach Jeff Halpern in the process of finding their head coach.
Halpern is a favorite among many Capitals fans. The Potomac, Maryland native spent parts of seven seasons with the Capitals before leaving for the last time after the 2011-12 season.
