Johnny-O logo
If you’ve read my posts over the years, you know I’m a sucker for a good logo. Johnny-O has one of the best! I live in New England and have never surfed, however I am drawn to their brand and style.
Originating in Massachusetts during the 1980s, Ocean Pacific T-shirts and JAMS shorts were the on-trend trend. Wearing surf-like clothing allowed us a temporary escape from the jackets, mittens, and hats our parents forced us into, as well as giving us a chance to fit into a lifestyle that was much cooler than we were.
As I got older, I continued to gravitate toward surf brands like Hurley and Quiksilver. Then about ten years ago (on the cusp of forty), I realized the need to improve my “surf wear”. Enter Johnny-O.
Economics New England meets West Coast Prep
Thrift runs in the blood of New Englanders and Yankees praise them like Henry David Thoreau. In Walden, he urged readers to exist simply and frugally. As a lifelong New Englander, I embody that spirit. This does not mean that I want something cheap or cheap. (I expect to pay for quality). This means that my golf apparel should feature versatility and a classic style that can be worn for years. I like to spend the money on polos, pants, and pullovers that can easily go from the office to the course and Everywhere between two. And unlike the JAMS from middle school, I want them to be more than just fashionable.
their motto, West Coast Prep, speaks for itself. Johnny-O has a sense of comfort but it’s not over the top. Definitely more of a relaxed preppy style compared to their competitors. I describe their style as Conservatively cool and easygoing.
Master’s motivation
Sam Bennett was one of the biggest stars of the 2023 Masters Tournament. His story, talent and composure captured our attention. For me, I kept going back to the surfer logo that appeared on his jersey. I decided it was time to add some new Johnnie-O pieces to my wardrobe. The brand’s cool vibe coupled with the quality, versatility, and functionality of their apparel is a perfect fit for this New England golf economy golf advisor who cares about his looks.
Right around the time Sam Bennett was wrapping up his latest run, I found myself excited to put together a curated collection of my favorites from johnnie-O. “Inspired by Sam Bennett,” if you will.

Cross Country PREP-FORMANCE 5-pocket pant
the Cross Country Pant She is your go-anywhere, do-anything pants. They have a classic chino design perfect for casual Fridays, an evening out, and of course on the course as we’ve seen Sam Bennett wearing these every day of the tournament. I’ve been traveling a lot in the past year and can easily see these as my go-to pants due to their lightweight comfort and stretch. Bonus points for the hidden back zip pocket. My waist is usually 34-35 inches, so I took the site’s advice and ordered a 35. It fits my waist perfectly. I find the seam to be quite long (but I tailor most pants anyway, so this wasn’t a problem). Interestingly, I then found out that johnnie-O offers free stitching on their pants! Next time, I’ll give it a try.
5 pocket trousers from Hugo
First off, I hate dungarees (but I like to use the word whenever I can). I find them stiff and uncomfortable, for the most part. the 5 pocket trousers from Hugo From afar, it looks like jeans, chinos, or even canvas pants depending on what you pair it with. But (notice the big but – and for the record they fit my big ass like a dream) they are so soft, smooth, and stretchy that these are my new favorite pants. Where the Cross Country would be my go-to golf and travel pant, the Hugo 5-Pocket Pant might cover everything else (including cool golf). I found this to fit just as well as the Cross Country.
Lyndon striped polo
Let’s face it, the striped polo is a classic look that will never go out of style. The stripes on this polo jersey are subtle enough that it feels almost like a solid but actually gives off a great pop of color. Part of the PREP-FORMANCE collection, the Lyndon It provides all the performance you’d expect from a golf polo without looking like an old polyester golf polo. I haven’t worn a johnnie-O for a few years, and I’ve noticed their fit has improved. Still “classic” but more tailored than I can remember. I used to reduce the size to a medium but now I’ve found that the large fits me better. Not too loose, not too skinny.
Huron Heatherd Polo
Also, part of the PREP-FORMANCE FAM, the Huron It might be the polo I’m most excited about. This is the lightest and softest shirt I’ve ever worn. I can easily imagine this turning out to be the best golf course on those hot and humid days. The “featherweight” material is 60 gsm lighter than a standard performance polo. The spotted design gives this a subdued look that will carry over to all your casual activities.
Sam’s printed polo
Johnnie-O offers a wide range of printed polo shirts; From playful and eccentric to subtle and sophisticated. Sam chose his fingerprints wisely. the Aiden Polo printed He stood out against the sea of green jackets when he kissed his amateur silver trophy low, while the print was dotted on Printed Polo Ken Dramatically elevates the classic white polo shirt.
Vaughn Striped 1/4 Zip Pullover Dante Hangin’ Out Polo
Last but not least, anytime I put together a gift guide, johnnie-O 1/4 zip is sure to make the list. love them! They are the best in the business world. In fact, my favorite is the photo above; It’s the meteorite’s method Striped 1/4 zip pullover. In this case, I placed it over the original 4 button Dante “Hangin’ Out” striped polo shirt Painted in heather gray for a great combination!
