Donnie Wahlberg shares an amazing story of watching C’s-Heat Game 6 in action appeared in the original NBC Sports Boston
Donnie Wahlberg is a huge Boston Celtics fan. If there’s a big game at TD Garden, there’s a good chance the New Kids On The Block frontman will be in attendance.
But during Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals on Saturday in Miami, Wahlberg watched from afar. He was performing in Chicago as the C’s struggled to keep their season alive, and his fans made sure to keep him up to date on the action.
Many Boston athletes and celebrities attend the C’s-Heat 7 game at TD Garden
Wahlberg, in the Game 7 building, told the story of the memorable party at the Celtics Pregame Live.
“We watched about three-quarters and had to go on stage,” Wahlberg recalled. “There are thousands of fans waiting and we’re like, ‘We gotta go.’ So one guy snuck in a phone, and we figured we wouldn’t find out until the end of the concert. Thousands of fans were showing us the game on their phones.”
Endgame 6 has caused some confusion as Derrick White pulled back on the whistle of the beater Went under review. But once the final result was official, Wahlberg and fans at the New Kids party were elated.
“We didn’t know what happened. All of a sudden, nobody was giving us an update, and we were looking to one side of the room and all the cell phones were saying Final 103-102, Miami won. And we’re like, ‘Oh no.’ Then I looked over there and all the phones said No. 104-103, Boston wins.”
“Brian Babineaux, the Celtics team photographer, he travels with us when he’s not with the team. So he was there filming the action. He was right on stage and I said, ‘He should know.'” … We announced it to the crowd – and we’re in Chicago, they’re just new kid fans but because they’re our fans, they love the Celtics. So it was an obsession, it was unbelievable. I still think after Game 3 we’ll be here for Game 7.”
Now, Wahlberg hopes to see the C’s become the first team in NBA history to come back from down 0-3 in the playoff series. They will join A very short list of professional sports teams that accomplished this feat. If they make it, they will face the Denver Nuggets in the 2023 NBA Finals.
