In an expected turn of events, the Philadelphia 76ers decided to fire head coach Doc Rivers.
Rivers and the Sixers squandered two chances in defeating the Boston Celtics and moving on to the Eastern Conference Finals, and that’s been his blueprint for the better part of his career now.
That’s why Colin Coward wasn’t surprised to see the 61-year-old get the boot.

He considered Cord Rivers a “cultural coach”, stating that he could help the team change its culture and establish a defensive identity.
However, he added, he’s unlikely to get another coaching gig at his age, mostly because he’s not adept at making adjustments, and his teams are always good rather than great.
Cowherd also said you’re not going to get those in-game or in-series tweaks that you get from guys like Erik Spoelstra or Steve Kerr with Rivers as your coach, and that became apparent at this point in his career.
Rivers teams have always followed the same pattern.
On top of that, he has thrown his players under the bus several times, which is why some don’t seem to enjoy playing with him in the first place.
Rivers has broken more playoff series than any other coach in NBA history, and he also owns the record for the most game 7 wins and losses in consecutive games.
It’s hard to come back from that kind of combo, so it’s hard to imagine him attracting interest even though there are multiple opportunities in the league now.
