The Chiefs’ Top 5 2023 NFL Matches – And The Likelihood Of They Getting It | Kansas City Star
1. Will McDonald, Iowa State, Edge rusher
What he lacks in weight, he makes up for with athleticism—and then some. His blast off the edge is his most noticeable trait, and one that makes him a perfect fit for the bosses.
A year ago, they used a first-round pick on defensive end George Karlaftis, but these are different players and players that complement perfectly. McDonald needs to add some heft to reach his full potential, but he’s the third sack artist off the edge that the Chiefs have needed for a while now – one built on speed and flexibility.
It’s more of an afterthought that McDonald’s outriggers measure 34 7/8 inches, making him one of the tallest rushing edges in this draft. This is a trait that Chiefs and Defense Coordinator Steve Spagnolo has always coveted.
• Chance of being in 31st position: about 70%
2. Anton Harrison, Oklahoma tackle
If the chiefs are drafting based on which position has the most visible hole, they take a correct tackle. That’s not how they should be drafted, but it’s possible that need and the best player available in an excellent position could find a marriage at No. 31 with Harrison.
He’s 6-foot-4 and weighs 315 pounds, but he’s a lot more agile than his weight might suggest. While he played left the past two seasons in college, he could slide to the right side as a junior, with Joanne Taylor having the flexibility to play left.
Harrison allowed just nine pressures on 447 pass-blocking takes, according to Pro Football Focus, which also cost him just three sacks allowed in the past two seasons. So why is he still available so late in the first round? Harrison is not known to be the most athletic, and there are questions about how he prepared his college RPO scheme for the NFL.
• Chance of being in 31st position: about 80%
Ed and Brad Budde both played offensive line for the Chiefs, and were both first-round draft picks—a unique feat in the NFL.
For just one example of how professional football has changed since its inception in Kansas City, look no further than Ed Budde, who was selected eighth overall in the 1963 NFL Draft.
“I made $15,000 the first year with a $5,000 bonus,” Budd says with a laugh. “Now, the No. 1 Options project are millionaires.”
Not only was Budde part of the draft class that laid the groundwork for the Chiefs’ first Super Bowl, he became a part of football history and a unique father-son feat that still stands, 43 years later.
Budd, a promising prospect from Michigan State, had a competitive offer to play in Philadelphia as the fourth overall pick in the NFL. But on the advice of former college teammate and then-president Fred Arbanas, Bodie gave the Eagles the cold shoulder.
“He told me about this new league and ‘It’s exciting,'” Boddy recalls.

Bobby Bell: Worth 15 cents and up
After another All-America season, Bpbby Bell was eligible for the 1963 drafts which occurred on December 3, 1962.
“My draft day?” Bill said. “I didn’t have one.”
Bale was in line as the business of professional football was unfolding. Then, he was heard to have been selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the second round of the NFL Draft and the Dallas Texans in the seventh round of the AFL Draft.
The Vikings were favored to land Bell, but Lamar Hunt, who founded the Texans — who in a matter of months would become the Kansas City Chiefs — visited Bell and offered him a guaranteed contract.
“Lamar said he wanted me to be part of the family,” Bell recalled. “I had never met the guy before. But he took care of me, gave me a long-term contract, and guaranteed my contract. The Vikings offered a three-year contract but they didn’t guarantee it.”
However, Bell soon found himself questioning joining the Texans. He and Hunt traveled to New York to finalize the deal. And Hunt left without money.
“I had to pay for the taxi and the toll,” said Bell, now 82, who called his advisor upon his arrival at the hotel and asked if he would sign with the right team.
On Bill’s 60th birthday, he receives a card from Hunt. What was registered inside was a dime and nickel, the cost of the fee.

One situation they should be watching is with Washington’s leaders. They have an important decision regarding a fifth-year option in Chase Young’s rookie contract. Next, attention would turn to defensive end Montez Sweet.
Sweat had his fifth-year draft option to the team last season and responded with another strong season. He recorded 8.0 sacks, 14 tackles for loss and 28 quarterback hits, starting in all 17 games. This performance earned him a perfect overall rating of 86.4 from PFF.
What might trade between chiefs and leaders look like? Kansas City could offer the 31st and 134th picks in the 2023 NFL Draft in exchange for Sweat and the 215th pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Not only does Washington pick another first-round pick in this pick and take a two-round lead, but it also clears up some of the sweat of the cap space trade. Set to hit the open market after the season, it will be virtually impossible for the captains to pay Race and Young having already signed Jonathan Allen and Darron Payne on long-term deals.

31. Kansas City Chiefs: Miles Murphy, DE, Clemson
Even after drafting George Carlaftis in the first round last year and signing free agent Charles Omeniho this year, the Chiefs could use an assist on the edge. The Chiefs see Omenihu fit right in alongside Chris Jones on the inside on pass, leaving an opening on the outside. Murphy is a very experienced player who can help out there, but he’s versatile enough to contribute in any situation. – Adam Tesher

31. Kansas City Chiefs: Mazie Smith, DT, Michigan
Adding another defensive lineman is more of a need for the Chiefs than a receiver. Since the combination, the chiefs have been interested in Smith. Not only is he expected to be a starter, but his talents and role should also impress defensive coordinator Steve Spagnolo and star defensive tackle Chris Jones. As the #1 player on Bruce Feldman’s 2022 sentiment list, Smith has the rare combination of strength and athleticism to take on two teams. That should help free Jones, the league’s top inside pass player, to win singles games and put pressure on the quarterback.
Smith also fits the Chiefs’ schedule when it comes to adding depth at the position because Derrick Nnadi and Tershawn Wharton are set to be unrestricted free agents next spring. – Nate Taylor

Odds of Levi’s going first overall in NFL Draft after anonymous post | ESPN
Bryce Young remains the favorite to be the top pick, listed at -1400 in Caesars Sportsbook, but on Tuesday, several sportsbookers reported receiving a huge raise on Will Levis to finish first, causing the former quarterback to move in. Kentucky crazy. Levis’ odds for top pick moved from 40-1 to 4-1 on Tuesday at DraftKings.
This type of odds move is usually huge, but the draft betting market is notoriously volatile. A new fake tweet or draft can quickly and significantly move the odds. The rush to work on Levis is believed to have been sparked by a Reddit post that claimed he was “telling friends and family that Karolina will actually take him on Thursday.”
“Due to the nature of the draft, we lowered the price significantly based on this action and ultimately got to the price where the bets off,” a DraftKings spokesperson told ESPN. “We are still seeing some small bets pouring in on the current price, but the speculation is that all the action has been from the back of Reddit.”
Sports website FanDuel and Caesars also reported an increase in bets on the Levis on Tuesday morning.

On Tuesday, the club announced that it had secured the rights to the International Home Marketing Area (IHMA) for Austria and Switzerland, allowing marketing efforts in those particular countries.

Given our history, we believe we are uniquely positioned to take advantage of these expanded commercial rights and develop fans in Austria and Switzerland, and we can’t wait to get started.”
The NFL controls which teams can market anywhere internationally in an effort to spread the wealth and prevent oversaturation. With a nod on Tuesday, the Chiefs can start paying for advertising, striking local sponsorship deals and hosting fan events in the countries listed.
