HONOLULU – Yancy Medeiros scored his first goal in over four years at the Bellator 295.
Medeiros (16-8 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) introduced Charlie Leary (17-14-1 MMA, 3-5 BMMA) at the 4:39 mark of the first round in front of his home fans at the Neal S. Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu. The finish was Medeiros’ first since stopping Alex Oliveira by third-round TKO in one of the best fights of 2017 at UFC 218.
“First, that guy Charlie came back from the dead after he fell,” Medeiros told MMA Junkie and other reporters. “He’s a tough guy. This guy’s really tough. When I left him the first time, that was the thing. Brah, I haven’t felt like this for a long time.”
“So I just came in for the kill, and then he ended up hitting it again. I was like, ‘Hey, calm down. You’re hurting him again. Put him down bro. Hit him up. That’s where the win is going to be. And that’s where he was.'” “
He fought Medeiros Leary in a 165-pound catchweight bout, which he revealed was his request.
“It was actually 165 for me,” Medeiros said. “I had an injury, honestly, and I was struggling with some stuff. I was like calling him and asking him for a month if we could do this at the right weight so I could fight, and treat that injury. He was so willing, and I really appreciated that from my opponent.”
