Patrick Reid pierced his ball of straw, and perhaps the reactions of people near the scene tell the story best.
We’ll start with Reid. On Friday, he was playing the first round of a LIV Golf London event, and his tee putt on the par-5 13th at Centurion Golf Club found the thick left rough, and attempted a punch. His ball exploded. Left pounded.
vein? His shoulders drooped. He said, “Oooh.” Hold the position for a few seconds.
What about fans? There were about 25 to Reid’s left. Most of them were looking at their phones and recording the event. On contact, they turned forward. Then they returned.
Did that ball really come inches from…a man’s head?
actually.
So how did you do he Respond? Quietly, despite the near Nakba. He dodged. Take a few steps forward. Take a few steps back.
What did all this look like on broadcast? We’ll use comments from analysts David Feherty and Jerry Foltz during our slow replay.
“He takes a great spin on that,” said Farty, “but he gets turned in the grass.”
“Oh,” said Foltz.
Farti said: Right over that man’s head. I just miss him.”
Ferity said, “Oh.” Patrick is a little worried about this dismissal, as well as his ball.”
There were more.
With the man okay, and seven seconds after being hit, Reed said a single word, which was audible to those around him and picked up by the broadcast microphones.
“the introduction”.
I drew laughter. “Foltz: He even had a presence of mind to joke about later and yell, lead,” Foltz said on the broadcast.
From there, Reid cruised to fifth on the hole, finishing with a one-under 71, followed by a second round 64, and will start Sunday’s final round four strokes behind leader Cam Smith.
“Well, Patrick Reed, who almost killed a man, has this on par,” Fertie said before the chip.
“Oh, boy,” said Foltz after the slide.
Good stuff, said Ferity.
And on Saturday, Reid had this exchange:
“Did you see the video from yesterday, the one that left?“
he did not do.
I cringed.“
“You’re talking about that number 5,” Reid said. “I haven’t seen it on video; I’ve seen it in person. I just sat there like oh, because—I was aiming the right way and just trying to lie and I knew he could grab the hole, and I was kind of playing for him if he got hold of him so he’d stay ok. I’ve never seen a cliff.” Holds tight in my life This thing came out down the left like that, and I was worried.
“I was worried it would take the guy’s head right away, and thank God he had quick reflexes because he dodged just in time.”
