For the first women’s major of the year, the weather wasn’t quite as cooperative in Houston as it historically was at the former home of the Chevron Championship in Rancho Mirage, Calif., at Mission Hills CC.
Weather delays stopped play through both the first round on Thursday and the second round on Friday, leaving some players with up to five holes to finish with the second round on Saturday morning.
A. Lim Kim is the club leader through the first 36 holes at the Chevron Championship after shooting an amazing 65 in the second round. She leads the field by a single shot with eight under par, with many of the game’s stars — such as Nelly Korda (six under) and Brooke Henderson (six under) — in hot pursuit.
However, for the other big names, Saturday will mark an early exit from the first major of the year. Here TK surprise players who missed the cut in The Woodlands, which is set at one end.
Lexi Thompson (two more)
Thompson had a history of success in this tournament when it was played at Rancho Mirage, posting seven top-10 finishes, including a win, since 2014. But she needed a birdie of at least two remaining holes in Saturday’s second round, and failed to par the transfer.
Lydia Ko (three up)
The world’s top-ranked player is on the brink of being inducted into the LPGA Hall of Fame, and it looks like this is the week she got her berth, after starting well with a one-under-71 round on Thursday. But Friday’s Tour started out in disaster, as Ko was par three on her first four holes. She eventually shot 76 kills and missed the cut by two.
Stacy Lewis (three more)
The Solheim Cup captain – and hometown favorite this week – still has plenty of games to play. But it simply wasn’t enough to get into the mix. Lewis missed the cut by two with rounds of 73-74.
Grace Kim (four up)
After her first win at the Lotte Championship last week, hopes were high for Kim, but she fired rounds of 75-73 to miss by three.
Charlie Hull (six more)
After being fired on a first-round 79, Hull found it difficult to recover. She was eight strokes better in the second round, but it wasn’t enough.
Jennifer Copshaw (six up)
With three wins in 2022, the defending champions looked like a solid bet this week. But a four-over-40 behind nine in round 2 resulted in a tournament kill of 78, bringing her to six over par overall.
SH Park (seven more)
The former World No. 1 and seven-time LPGA title winner (including two majors) is trying to find the magic that sparked her stellar 2017-2019 season. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the week, as The Woodlands were knocked out by rounds of 79-72.
