The last time the San Antonio Spurs lost more than 60 games in a single season was in 1996-97. That year, the team lost star heartthrob David Robinson to a back and foot injury, and his loss turned the perennial playoff team into one of the worst teams in the league.
However, that bad luck soon turned into good fortune when they won a draft lottery and the right to pick the unanimous number one pick, Tim Duncan. Suffice it to say that this choice worked for Tottenham. Duncan went on to become one of the greatest players in sports history, San Antonio never winning fewer than 50 games in a season (excluding the strike-shortened 1998-99 campaign) and collecting five NBA championships during his time there.
Fast forward to 2023, and the Stars are once again allied with the Spurs, as the team looks poised to take on the biggest player in this year’s draft class. Although the 22-60 team this year wasn’t the result of injury ordeal, their lottery success has remained the same. As a result, they are poised to sign French phenom Victor Wimpanyama.
He could turn a potential top pick into a Spurs side who have struggled since losing Kawhi Leonard.
Described as a “generational talent”, Tottenham will hope the seven talents live up to expectations. If he did, they would get someone who could fill in a lot of gaps for them.
