INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Aja Wilson scored 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Candace Parker made two free throws with 24 seconds left and the Las Vegas Ices beat the Indiana Fever 84-80 on Sunday to extend their franchise record for consecutive wins to open a season.
The Aces (6-0), trailing by 10 points after Indiana’s Kelsey Mitchell scored with a triple early in the fourth quarter, ended the game with a score of 23-9.
Las Vegas used an 11-1 run capped by Chelsea Gray’s three-point game that made it 72 points with 4:03 to play. Erica Wheeler hit a layup and 3 with 2:32 remaining gave the Fever a five-point lead but after Kelsey Bloom scored inside for the Aces, Jackie Young hit back-to-back touchdown passes to make it 80–79.
Aliyah Boston tied the game by making Indiana’s second of two free throws with 47.1 from the end, but Parker’s missed shots put the Aces ahead.
Mitchell missed a layup with 15 seconds left and Las Vegas tricked the clock until Alisha Clark was fouled with 1.7 seconds left and hit two free throws to seal the game.
Mitchell led Indiana (1-4) with 22 points, hitting five three-point attempts. Wheeler added 15. Boston had foul trouble and only had seven points and four rebounds in their first game against Wilson—pitting two former Gamecocks who were in first place.
Young scored 18 points and Gray added 17 points with eight rebounds and seven assists for the Las Vegas team.
The Aces had a WNBA record for consecutive games by scoring at least 90 points in five games.
