Oceanside is in many ways the quintessential California coastal town: palm trees, sandy beaches, the famous wooden pier jutting into the Pacific Ocean, and the state’s museum of surf. It’s also home to the Titleist Institute of Performance, making it an ideal venue not only for the top ten crowd but also for the wannabe set of number one, scratching and extra handicap.
The facility’s mission since its inception in 1997 has been straightforward, though not simple – to provide the most advanced golf equipment, evaluation, testing and instruction facilities anywhere. Pristinely preserved as a five-star resort, the 33-acre site features high-quality clubhouse fixtures, unparalleled ball and club testing and features three pristine fairways, a fitness center to live for, and a 3D motion capture studio. What is being captured? Data from thousands of golf swings, from Titleist staff like Max Homma, Will Zlatoris, and Daniel Kang to regular Joe and Jens in order to study how the human body works throughout the swing. This means a swing that works properly and effectively, as well as exposing how it doesn’t work, with the potential injuries that can result.
“Our main goal at TPI is to educate golf industry professionals and the public about the importance of the body and how it relates to the golf swing,” says TPI founder Dave Phillips. “We have thousands and thousands of data points that we’ve collected over the last 20 years and know that golfers will benefit most from a healthy Efficient Body.”
If you can make the trek, TPI is well worth a visit to the in-person PDQ for clubhouse equipment and golf fitness experiences. This is Kali, the place that brought us the phrase “technology hub”, it is worth noting that TPI is also that. TPI’s flagship R&D facility is a nerve center spread across the globe, with installers in every market and a network of more than 20,000 TPI-certified professionals in 63 countries. So if you can’t get to Oceanside, you can still get access to Oceanside from TPI corporate knowledge.
