The Washington Capitals placed right-wing Matthew Phillips on waivers on Thursday. If he clears by 2 PM ET on Friday, the 25-year-old will likely be reassigned to the AHL’s Hershey Bears.

After signing a one-year contract in the District on July 1 as an unrestricted free agent, Phillips has earned a goal and five points in 27 games. He scored his first career NHL goal in Washington’s 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames, where he played the first three games of his NHL career last season.
Phillips has played just one game since January 4, skating 8:54 in Washington’s 4-2 loss to the Florida Panthers on February 8.
The move was made likely to make room to activate left-wing Sonny Milano, who has not played since December 10 due to an upper-body injury, from injured reserve. Head coach Spencer Carbery said this week that the 27-year-old is expected to return on Saturday against the Montreal Canadiens (7 PM ET, Monumental Sports Network in-market, ESPN+ out-of-market).
