Frankie Edgar has spent nearly eight full hours inside the UFC Octagon during his illustrious career, but that doesn’t mean he’s not prone to mistakes now and then.
The former UFC lightweight champion, who announced his retirement from active competition last November, posted a video to his Instagram account on Monday showing a recent mishap he had while training with another fighter.
The video shows Edgar slumping during a sparring session, but instead of hitting the cage wall, the New Jersey native fell overboard and fell to the ground instead.
“Over 18 years in the game and I still make rookie mistakes,” Edgar wrote. “I forgot to lock the cage door when I was training Mark Gray and the Boom! I was expecting to feel the cage on my back, but instead I felt the stairs digging into my back and the back of my head on the floor.
“Luckily there were rubber mats on the floor. I still got up and we finished the session, we battled to win!”
Edgar was clearly in good shape physically after the accident, though his pride may have taken a beating based on his fall out of the cage. It appears he didn’t sustain any injuries, with the training session continuing after that – although he might have checked twice to make sure the door was secured next time.
