When it comes to the best lightweights in the world, Vadim Nemkov is at or near the top of most lists.
According to Bellator president Scott Cocker, Nemkoff cemented his status as the The top 205-pound talent with his dominant title defense against Yoel Romero at Bellator 297 headliner Friday night in Chicago.
“Nimkov to me is the best 205-pounder on the planet in any MMA league, including the best of the UFC 205-ers,” Cocker said at Bellator 297’s post-fight press conference.
“I believe what I saw [at Bellator 297] It was his speed, agility and combos. He can kick, punch, take you down, and defend. He can do it all. I think that’s what I saw tonight.”
Former UFC middleweight title challenger Romero absorbed a lot of damage from Nemkov over the course of the five-round fight. Other than a late takedown and some attempts to lull Nemkov to sleep in the style of a drunken master, Romero struggled to write down any moments of note. Coker says this is evidence of Nemkoff’s talent.
“Yoel Romero is a scary guy,” Cocker said. “If he punches or hits you, you’re going to get in trouble. I think what I saw is Nemkov’s skill level. He’s embarrassing. The guy is really, really good.”
After his latest win, Nemkov hinted that a move up to heavyweight could be on the cards. However, Cocker noted that a third match between champion and Grand Prix foe Corey Anderson might be worth exploring down the road. Anderson kept himself relevant in the title debate with a split decision victory over Phil Davis in another featured bout at Bellator 297. Nemkov secured a unanimous decision over Anderson in the bracket finals at Bellator 288 after the first match – which Anderson looked like he would win – was ruled a contest due to Accidental clash of heads.
“I know Corey wants to shoot him,” Cocker said. “Think about that first fight, Cory was on his way to winning that fight…they stop it and it didn’t work out for him. The second fight didn’t work out. I think Namekoff studied a lot of film on Cory and made a lot of adjustments. Is a rubber match worth it? I think he is.” As well. But when and where, we’ll see.”
