While driving a golf ball is always at the forefront of a player’s mind, if you are not able to hit great iron putts, your round will suffer. This is why golf ball pressure is so crucial—and yet, unfortunately, something many amateurs struggle with.
Just last week, I wrote a story about using only a 6-iron of every shot outside of 50 yards. The aim of the focused practice run was to avoid swinging my driver – because I’ve been hitting heels for the past month or so.
To my surprise, it wasn’t actually my first shot on the tee that was killing my round: it was my iron shot and my short game that led to the high numbers.
With that in mind, I’m always on the lookout for solid tips to improve my iron shots, and I found something interesting from Top 100 GOLF Instructor Brian Mogg – which can be seen in the video below.
How a towel can help you get better iron shots
As the video from Mogg’s Instagram shows, hitting iron shots is a possibility—you just need to work to keep your swing on board and make sure the face is square on impact.

This is where Mogg suggests using your bag towel for a quick-fix drill.
“A great exercise you can do is to grab the towel and place it slightly behind the ball,” says Mogg.
Once you’ve positioned the towel (about three inches behind the ball), focus on your setup before taking the swing. If you hit the towel, you’re missing iron shots—which can cause hooks, slices, block cuts, or overhead shots.

“If you set up too far on your butt or backwards, you’ll hit the towel,” Moog adds. “Take your setup and make sure that towel misses. It gets that club out, and it reduces a lot in the swing.”
By bringing the club into the court, it will have a better chance of hitting the right spot on the front of the club – which will lead to straighter shots and more.
“A good iron game requires you to get through everything,” says Moog. “You want to press it against that iron.”
