Add Tristen Newton’s name to the list of UConn men’s basketball players experiencing the waters of the NBA draw straight from winning the national championship.
declared Newton, an El Paso native Wed on Instagram He will declare for the 2023 NBA draft while maintaining his collegiate eligibility.
Like Andre Jackson, who made a similar decision on Tuesday, Newton will attend the NBA draft and be evaluated by NBA scouts. He will have until the May 31 deadline to decide whether he stays in the draft or returns to college.
“It was an unparalleled experience in being able to bring back a National Championship to Storrs and the Husky Nation,” Newton’s post read. “I want to thank my coaches and teammates for giving me the opportunity to represent UConn, and for pushing me to be the best player I can be every single day. Last but not least, I want to thank my family for always supporting me and for showing me their continued love and support.”

Newton, the 6-foot-6, 190-pound guard who transferred to UConn before this season after three years at East Carolina, was honored at Senior Knight and will have a year of eligibility as a graduate student if he decides to return.
The only player in UConn history, men’s or women’s, to record multiple triple-doubles in the same season, Newton finished the year with averages of 10.1 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.7 assists. He had a crucial performance in the national championship game, tallying 19 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals. He made all eight of his shots in the game to secure the title.
Newton was not included in most mock drafts.
UConn stars Jordan Hawkins and Adama Sanogo have also been announced for the draft.
