Toronto Maple Leafs fans are beginning to see how new general manager Brad Treleving will run his business. It was slow the first day but by the second day things picked up. To date, among his free agent signings are Ryan Reaves, Max Domi, and Tyler Bertuzzi.
But the thing is, Treliving points out that it’s not over yet. Still working off season for continuous evaluation and strategizing. For him, recent free agency acquisitions were just the beginning.
Treliving is clearly determined to rebuild the team further. And while it may be tough, he’s been working hard to secure new contracts for two of the team’s stars – Auston Matthews and William Nylander.

Treliving search for continuous improvement
According to Treleving, optimization is a constant business. Despite recent free agency moves, he says the team’s journey to greatness is far from over. GM tells the Maple Leafs that complacency has no place in a winning organization. And according to the video below, he remains steadfast in his commitment to exploring all available opportunities to further strengthen the team.
Treliving will explore different avenues
As the video shows, Treliving believes improvement doesn’t necessarily come from free agent signings alone. He acknowledges the importance of these acquisitions, but also recognizes that the commercial market holds great potential for securing impactful additions to the team.
He is also looking for traditional methods to uncover hidden gems that can contribute to the success of the Maple Leafs. He is willing to explore different ways to build a championship caliber lineup.
Treliving still believes Matthews and Nylander are top priorities
Treliving still believes his six best players are his top priority. They both need new contracts. He knows that both Matthews and Nylander are tremendous talent and that their roles are vital to the team. As a result, he made it clear that these negotiations are key.
It also takes on the importance of keeping the team’s key players happy and motivated. If he can, he will help ensure long-term success for the Maple Leafs.

One thing live is the constant dialogue
Treliving continues to maintain ongoing discussions with almost everyone. This is especially true of Matthews and Nylander, who are committed to open communication for mutually positive results.
Treliving believes that by engaging in such dialogue, he can help learn and address their needs and desires—that is, if they fit into the team’s goals.
Treliving’s proactive approach also underscores its determination to secure the long-term future of these key players.
bottom line
As shown in this brief video above, Treliving’s own words indicate that he is dedicated to improving the squad by focusing on signing new contracts for both Matthews and Nylander.
The trick becomes if any of those players overstep their common sense in what they feel is their best use of the salary cap space they have with that team. It would be counterintuitive to give all the salary cap space to a few players.
We as Maple Leafs fans will see what happens if those limits are reached. In fact, Treliving aims to strengthen the team in any way possible. However, he has to build a partnership with the players and get their commitment.
Can he do that? Good intentions or not? We’ll see soon. He promises to keep trying; But can he deliver? Not everything is on it.
