The 2023 season comes second on deck as the world’s best golfers head to Oak Hill for the PGA Championship.
Since moving to May, the PGA Championship has been the first full-field major tournament, with 156 golfers nearly double the 88 players on the limited field masters.
The PGA, unlike the US Open and Championships, does not have amateurs in the field, and there is no open qualifier. The PGA of America uses 13 qualification criteria, as well as special invitations to fill the field. Normally, all golfers in the world’s top 100 make the field. However, 20 PGA of America professionals are in the field this week after qualifying through the PGA Professional Championship.
Phil Mickelson is back on the field this year, after losing his title defense last year. Mickelson will join 16 other LIV Golf professionals on the field. There were 18 LIV golfers in the field at the Masters, with three of the top six finishers coming from opponents, including Mickelson as co-runner-up with Brooks Koepka.
Absent from the court is Tiger Woods, who played last year at Southern Hills and last month at the Masters, while recovering from ankle surgery.
