SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Golden State Warriors are promoting within the team to replace general manager Bob Myers, naming Mike Donleavy Jr. as their new general manager Friday ahead of next week’s draft.
Owner Joe Lacob said when Myers announced on May 30 that he would be leaving when his contract expired at the end of June that the organization would aggressively consider internal candidates.
The 42-year-old Dunleavy has worked closely under Myers since moving into the front office, serving as vice president of basketball operations for both seasons after two years as assistant general manager. He will begin his sixth season in a front office role. Dunleavy became a professional scout for the Warriors in 2018 once he finished his 15-year career during which he spent 2002 through part of 2007 with Golden State.
The Warriors selected him with the third overall pick in 2002 from Duke.
“We believe Mike is the perfect fit to lead our basketball operations department,” said Lakob. “He has a wealth of knowledge in basketball, stemming from his family upbringing, a 15-year career in the NBA and five seasons of service under Bob Myers in our front office. He is young and energetic, has built many relationships throughout the league and gets on well with Players and coaches – all important attributes on the field. Mike is ready to take on that challenge and responsibility.”
Dunleavy has big shoes to fill and make decisions for Myers leaves After losing the Warriors in the Western Conference Semifinals to LeBron James and the Lakers after last year’s Golden State Championship.
Draymond Green has a player option worth $27.6 million and has said he would like to stay with the core of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson to help the Warriors chase another championship.
