The chance to bring home a second world championship for the Edwards family is “a huge motivating factor” for middleweight Fabian Edwards, he told Cageside Press on Wednesday. “it’s huge.”
Edwards (11-2) is the brother of UFC welterweight champion Leon “Rocky” Edwards, a year younger than him while competing in a higher weight class. This Friday at Bellator 296 in Paris, France, he faces off against former champion and longtime MMA star Gegard Mousasi.
It is widely expected that the winner will get the next crack, facing current champion Johnny Iblin.
“I try to make that history, and that’s it. I try to make that history, and that’s it. I’m trying to make that history, and like you say I’m two steps away from it. Friday night, after I do my work I’ll be one step away, and yeah I’m stuck in it.”
At that point, Edwards agrees that he and his brother Leon would be the two greatest brothers in mixed martial arts history. “When I bring it home, sure. When I bring home that belt, I don’t see you can say otherwise. I don’t think it was done at the same time in different establishments. When I make that history you can therefore claim it.”
It seems like opponent Moses has been around the sport forever, at least in terms of combat sports. A veteran of PRIDE, Strikeforce and the UFC, the Dutch superstar is still the right side of the 40 despite two decades in the sport. However, regardless of his legacy, Moses wasn’t someone Fabian Edwards was watching when he got his start in MMA.
