Dillon Brooks will be a free agent this season, and his future with the Memphis Grizzlies is uncertain given his commitments on offense and the fact that they pursued promotions early in the forward deadline. Brooks is a very effective defensive player, but does not ground down the flank in a way that increases Memphis’ offense and has questionable shooting selection.
The Grizzlies pursued deals at Deadline for Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby.
“They tried to upgrade at the trade deadline,” said Tim McMahon on the Brian Windhorst Podcast. They threw four picks to the Nets in an effort to get Mikal Bridges. They couldn’t really get the Raptors in serious talks, but they were going to give up some options to get OG Anuoby. They tried to go from Dillon Brooks already.
“I don’t know if Dillon Brooks is on that team after this series. We’ll see if the Grizzlies can come back and win it. I definitely don’t know if he’s on that team after free agency this summer, but the problem is if he’s not, who’s guarding Top players? All-stars on other teams?”
MacMahon suggests that the Grizzlies could re-engage the Nets with a deal for Dorian Finney-Smith, who could be a more feasible trade target.
“If they let Dillon Brooks, they definitely have to get a really, really good defensive winger. They can let him go in free agency, they just have to figure out how to replace me. Believe me, they’ve put a lot of thought into it.”
