The 2023 Open marks the men’s final of the year, and we’re picking a former major champion who’s been flying under the radar as our long pick to win. Here’s our pick, Open Championship odds, betting favorites and everything else you need to know for this week.
Open Championship Odds: Long Range Bet
Our long pick for this week’s tournament at Royal Liverpool is Hideki Matsuyama, who entered the week with +8,000 chances to win.
Matsuyama is no stranger even to the casual golf fan. He’s a grand champion, having triumphed in the 2021 Masters tournament to earn his first green jacket. In all, the 31-year-old Japanese star has eight PGA Tour victories in his career, though his most recent win came at the 2022 Sony Open in Hawaii.
Hideki wasn’t having his best season on the Tour, having only two top-10 finishes in 2022-23. But he only missed three cuts, and he’s performed respectably in the majors so far.
At the Masters tournament he finished T16, at the PGA he ended up making it to T29 and at last month’s US Open a final round 75 dropped him to T32.
Matsuyama opted not to play the Genesis Scottish Open last week, so he’s having a good rest. That, along with his pedigree and long odds, make him a solid long-range pick this week.
If he hits his second big win at Royal Liverpool, a $10 bet will win him $800. Consider adding additional small bets on Hideki for a Top 10 and Top 20 finish.
Looking for more long picks at the World Open? Our honorable mention long picks for this week are Tom Kim (+4,500) and Jason Day (+10,000).
Open Championship odds: The favourites
After his 24th PGA Tour victory at the Genesis Scottish Open, which brought him back to No. 2 in the world, Rory McIlroy is the betting favorite with a +700 chance of winning in his return to his only Open victory.
He is followed closely by world number one Scotty Scheffler (+800), with Masters champion John Rahm emerging in third (+1200).
Defending champion Cameron Smith is fourth with a time of +1600, with Brooks Koepka and Viktor Hovland rounding out the top four in odds at +2000.
