Woburn’s Mark Stockdale made the most of his home turf to win the England Under-25 Amateur Championship after completing an eight-under-54 at the Bedfordshire club.
Stockdale shot rounds of 68, 69 and 71 to win by three shots from Yorkshire’s Max Beresford.
Stockdale were joint leaders alongside Oliver Cage (Moortown) after day two, but the pair did not have the front nine they had hoped for as the lead changed hands several times throughout the hectic final day.
Craig Passmore (Torquay), who went into the final round by just three shots after a stunning second round that included eight birdies, had a solid start with three more birdies after five holes when he shot to the top of the leaders. However, his charge fell away from the eighth hole on.
Stockdale batted back from a strong start into his final round, which featured four bogeys on the front nine, to turn things around in dramatic fashion on his back nine, re-bathing a four birdie and an eagle on a stunning series of holes that included six consecutive triples from the 12th. This saw Woburn’s man come home 31 shots to facilitate his three-shot victory.
Hamish Hall (Studley Wood) produced a final round 69 to jump the lead to third, while Joe Buenfield (Bramshaw) finished fourth after a par 72.
