In many ways, Jill Spiegel seemed destined to spend her working life in Metro Detroit after graduating from Michigan State University with a BA in Advertising, and pursuing a career somehow related to the auto business.
After all, I grew up in the village of Orchard Lake, a suburb about 25 miles northwest of Motor City. Her father, TJ Young, ran Ford Motor Co.’s North American paint company. Her two brothers also had jobs in the auto industry. Spiegel could certainly apply what she learned in college to a position with, say, one of the many Detroit advertising agencies promoting cars made by Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors. Or you might buy a job with one of the automakers themselves.
