Some unfortunate circumstances forced Shawn Brady to pull out of his proposed bout against Jacques Della Maddalena at UFC 290.
The Philadelphia welterweight recently revealed on Instagram that septic bursitis was the reason he was left off the card on Saturday.
“Hey guys, as most of you know, I recently had to pull out of my fight next weekend. I noticed a small blister on my left elbow after training Monday night and I woke up with bad swelling and pain. As most of you know, I had a very serious staph infection.” in 2021, resulting in surgery and [four] Weeks of intravenous antibiotics through the pic line, brady wrote. “My wife, as a nurse, took a look at my arm on Tuesday morning and told me it would be the best idea to go to the hospital (for what we thought would be a single dose of intravenous antibiotics) and get discharged and go through the rest of camp and head to Vegas.
“Unfortunately that wasn’t the case. My arm continued to swell and I didn’t take antibiotics well. The swelling and pain got worse, and the orthopedic surgeon had to dump my elbow twice and send cultures to determine the correct course of antibiotics. Fortunately, by Thursday, they were able to determine that A cluster of Strep pyogenes was growing in my left elbow, which soon spread to the bursa causing septic bursitis.I was able to get out of the hospital but I still had some swelling and the doctor said there was no way I could fight it and I should let this one recover “I’m devastated that I put my heart and soul into this sport and this camp. I sacrificed my honeymoon with my wife. I spent money I’ll never get back. But things happen man and I’ll come back stronger than ever.”
Maddalena will remain on the UFC 290 card, as Josiah Harrell comes in on less than a week’s notice to face the Australian prospect on Saturday. Brady also addressed Maddalena
initial reaction for his withdrawal from their battle.
“To Jack, I’m so sorry we won’t be able to share a cage together,” Brady wrote. “I know you worked as hard as me but as far as saying, ‘Brady got off the bed’ I would expect that from an internet troll, but not a fellow fighter himself so shame on you and I hope you/none of your teammates have to go through this in The future. We will see each other soon.”
Brady last appeared at UFC 280, where he fell to Bilal Muhammad by technical knockout in the second round – his first defeat in 16 professional bouts. The former Cage Fury Fighting Champion has wins against the likes of Michael Chiesa, Jake Matthews and Court McGee.
