Sergio Garcia will miss a major for the first time in 24 years after the 43-year-old Spaniard was not among the names listed on the field by the United States PGA for the American PGA Championship, which takes place in Oak Hill, New York, from May 18-21.
Since joining LIV Golf, whose tournaments do not hold any world ranking points, Garcia has fallen to 189th in the table, dropping out of the top 100 for the first time in 23 years last November.
After his dramatic fall down the world rankings, the 2017 Masters champion, who resigned his membership on the PGA Tour last June and his membership on the DP World Tour last week, is no longer automatically exempt from the PGA Championship.
Despite Garcia’s absence, 18 LIV Golf players will be in the field for the second major championship of the season, including Paul Casey, who received a special invitation. The 44-year-old Englishman is currently ranked 131st in the world. He finished fourth at the 2021 PGA Championship at Kiawah Island, but ruled himself out of last year’s renewal at Southern Hills due to a back injury.
Currently, 99 of the world’s top 100 players will feature in Oak Hill next week, with the only absentee being Will Zlatoris, who will miss the season after back surgery. Also out of action is Tiger Woods, who underwent ankle surgery last month.
