Welcome to Play Smart, a regular GOLF.com game improvement column that will help you play smarter and better golf.
Many amateurs strive for more power and clubhead speed, hoping to gain distance with all of their shots—not just with the driver. But the important thing to remember is how important your hands are in order to achieve this – because how you move your hands and body together is important in developing bat and ball speed.
We all try to get as much energy into the club, clubhead and ball as possible on impact. Therefore, it is imperative to swing the club with rhythm, balance and stability. You should also be able to use the ground with your feet to create an efficient body motion, which will help you increase your speed.
But how many times have you tried to swing a club quickly and found yourself losing your balance, affecting your clubhead speed? Maybe more often – and you’re not alone.
When you lose your stability, rhythm, and balance on the golf swing, the effort to create the motion can never efficiently exit from the body to the hand/handle connection; Or club and ball.

Blast Motion is a great solution for more tech-savvy players who want to not only track their speed gains, but also learn more about different aspects of their golf swing. The Blast uses a 3D inertial sensor attached to the top of the club to track and measure the movement of the club during the golf swing.
In today’s edition of Play Smart, PGA certified trainer Rick Murphy breaks down six functional moves that will help you assess and improve your mobility, which will help you reveal your stability. It’s something he likes to call “the most.”
By improving your “maximal ability,” Murphy says, you’ll give yourself the best chance of increasing your ball speed and speed. This will lead to more power and distance in your game.
So take a look below at Murphy’s moves. By incorporating each into your warm-up routine before practice or play, you’ll immediately begin creating more movement and stability for longer shots. Give them a chance!
1. Right leg lunge (right)
Starting in the normal heading position, place your feet about a foot apart. Do a right foot/leg lunge, moving laterally to the right and loading weight on your right foot, shin, and thigh. At the same time, fully rotate your hips and shoulders to the right.
2. Front lunge of the right leg (forward)
As above, start in the normal heading position, with your feet about one foot apart. Do a right foot/front leg lunge, stepping forward and loading weight on your right foot, shin, and thigh. Now, fully rotate your hips and shoulders to the right at the same time.
3. Inward lunge of the right leg (backward)
In a normal heading position with your feet about a foot apart, do a lunge for right foot/leg, then return to the right and bring the weight to your right foot, shin, and hip. Rotate your hips and shoulders completely to the right at the same time.
4. Left leg lunge (lateral)
Set up in your normal heading position, and lunge with left foot/left leg, moving laterally to the left and loading weight on your left foot, shin, and thigh. At the same time, fully rotate the hips and shoulders to the left.
5. Front left leg lunge (forward)
Again, start in your normal setup, with feet about one foot apart. Next, do a forward lunge with the left foot/left leg, stepping forward to load the weight on your left foot, shin, and thigh. Now fully rotate your hips and shoulders to the left at the same time.
6. Rear left leg lunge (back)
Finally, from the normal heading position with your feet about one foot apart, do a back lunge for left foot/hind leg, then step back to the left and bring the weight to your left foot, shin, and hip. At the same time, fully rotate the hips and shoulders to the left.
