cOry Crelan got a lot of weird looks when he climbed to the first tee at Oak Hill Country Club the day after the 2023 PGA Championship and pulled his Persimmon driver MacGregor Tourney with a gamma fire. He spun his Wilson Dew ball, took a few shakes and swung away. His slight thrust ended up in the thick right rough and resulted in a double open.
“It’s a tough hole,” said Crelan, of the par-4 class that ranked ninth in difficulty of the week for the world’s top pros using the most modern equipment.
Crelan shot the 84 at Oak Hill without the latest equipment. The 49-year-old former club pro from Norwalk, Connecticut carried a bunch of sticks from another century. Hogan Apex II “Cameo” irons were purchased by his father in 1980. His Titleist Dead Center putter (bought for $5 and refurbished) is a mid-1980s model. His drivers ranged from the MacGregor and Eye-o-Matic 4-wood as well as the Hogan Anniversary 3-wood from the 60’s to the 80’s.
