Well, nearly two weeks after the day former Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas was let go, the team looks set to name its 18th general manager in franchise history, according to TSN’s Darren Dreger.
On TSN’s Insider Trading Tuesday night, insiders reported that the search for a general manager is still on, and Treliving has been the ever-present favorite for the job here in Toronto.
Fast forward two hours later, and Dreger dropped a little bombshell on his Twitter that said that while nothing was official yet, he sounded like the former Calgary GM, Brad Treliving would become the 18th Toronto general manager in franchise history.
Although nothing official until the Toronto Maple Leafs confirmed it themselves, given the personal encounter between Treliving and the Maple Leafs and also the relationship between Treliving and Tanennbaum, it made sense, and it was only a matter of time before Treliving became a member. Toronto’s next general manager after Dubas was fired.
If all goes well and Treliving is hired by Toronto, he’s coming to another Canadian market after spending the previous nine seasons with the Flames organization.
In the nine years with Calgary, Treliving’s Flames have achieved a record of 362-265-73, making the playoffs five times and winning only one innings twice (2015 and 2022). He also has two division titles to his name while he’s there when the team won them over the 2018-19 and 2021-22 seasons.
Treliving, 53, has the potential to enter a larger market with more media and big decisions to be made immediately with the current roster in Toronto. From contract negotiations for Matthews and Nylander to a possible trade for someone, and eventually the draft and free agency falling just around the corner, this will be Treliving’s first off season in Toronto if he ends up becoming general manager, which all signs point to now.
