Washington Capitals defender Rasmus Sundin suffered a knee injury in the first period of Team Sweden’s 2023 IIHF World Championship preliminary game against Team USA on Tuesday.
Just minutes into the game, USA (and Tampa Bay Lightning) forward Mason Esimont collided with Sandin along the boards, making contact with Sandin’s left knee.

Sandin was left out on the ice for a while but would eventually be pushed off the ice with the help of coaches and players. He was unable to put any weight on his left leg He will go straight to the locker room.
For Mason Eyssimont, after reviewing the video, the referees decided to hold a five-minute main match with a penalty later in the match.
during the first break, Sweden announced Sanden will not return to action after suffering a lower body injury and the defender will undergo further examination this evening.
Sandin started all matches in the best pairing for the Sweden team. He entered Tuesday’s game with one assist in six World Series appearances.
Today’s match between Team USA (6-0) and Team Sweden (5-0-1) is the final game in group play for both teams, with Group A’s top spot on the line.
Team Sweden announced its final roster for the 2023 IIHF World Championship (WC) on May 9. Sandin made the final list while newly acquired Hardy Hamann Aktel did not make the final 25-man list.
