DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Pistons and Isaiah Stewart have agreed a $64 million four-year contract extension, according to a person familiar with the deal.
The person spoke to The Associated Press Monday night on condition of anonymity because the agreement has not been made public. ESPN was the first to report another player deal with the Pistons.
Stewart averaged 11.3 points and 8.1 rebounds last season. He averaged nine points and 7.8 rebounds over his three-year career and was entering the final year of his rookie contract.
The former Washington star was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers with the #16 pick in 2020 and over the next week, was traded to Houston and Detroit.
The 6-foot-8 Stewart provides a much-needed physical presence to the Pistons.
Detroit’s hopes of rebuilding are largely tied to the return of Kidd Cunningham from shin surgery, along with sophomore pros Jaden Ivey and Jalen Doreen, and rookie winger Osar Thompson.
The Pistons won an award NBA – 17 games last season Duane Casey stepped down as coach a year short of his contract to take up a front office role. The three-time NBA championship-winning franchise has earned a spot in the playoffs only twice in 14 years.
