Rochester, NY – The plateau? This is rare.
But the reaction? that was summit Phil Mickelson.
Lefty is playing in the PGA Championship this week, and playing respectably on the East Course at Oak Hill Country Club. It opened with a number three over 73 on Thursday, followed it up with 72 on Friday and lowered the number. And coming into the weekend here, Mickelson has racked up some sublime accomplishments.
On the PGA Championship front, Mickelson has made his 27th cut (in 30 starts), tying him for most all-time with Jack Nicklaus and Raymond Floyd. However, the number nearly quadruples when looking at cuts made across all disciplines.
There, Mickelson hit 100 (in 119 starts), third all-time behind Nicklaus, who scores 131, and Gary Player, who scores 102. (If you were wondering, Tiger Woods has made 77 cuts in 91 major starts.) And over the past couple of days, Mickelson has had a few thoughts on the whole thing.
We’ll go from thinking — to looking forward, we’ll call it.
on friday night, Dan Rappaport of Barstool Sports tweeted A note on 100 achievements, which This response drew Michelson:
“I didn’t play as well as I expected but tomorrow is another chance. Oak Hill is a great main course and set up as I’ve seen. Well done PGA. It’s never easy to find the line between marking the best or embarrassing them. Oak Hill and the PGA have nailed it!”
That’s high praise. to reporter with PGA Championship website On the Saturday after the third round 75, he was thinking similarly.
“It shows that I’ve had a lot of great experiences in golf and that I’ve had a lot of great years and opportunities and I think life experiences,” the 52-year-old told the website. “Playing in these tournaments is something I value a lot.
“I mean, it just goes to show how old I am, I guess, and how many years I’ve been playing. But it’s been really fun to be in so many great events and play well in them.”
Mickelson also rolled it, well, forward. Keira K Dixon, Sky Sports, The hero asked this six times Saturday afternoon:
“I want to talk about my achievement after making the cut yesterday. Twenty-seven made cuts in the PGA Championship. One hundred made cuts in the major championships. How much does it mean to you to reach a milestone like that?”
who drew this Michelson’s response, as described as best we can.
“[Looking down at a monitor] Yes, the first 100 cuts were interesting,” he began. “I think the 100 seconds will be the most interesting part. But um. ”
[He smiled, He looked up at Dixon. He shook his head. He continued.]
“I think – I didn’t know about this cutting line, and [he paused] It’s many years. I mean, it’s a lot of golf. I didn’t realize there was so much and something I’m definitely proud of, but it also shows my age and also shows a lot of great experiences I’ve had and I really appreciate that.”
Some lightness. some depth. Michelson is complete.
