PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan is recovering from a “medical condition,” according to a statement released Tuesday night by Monahan and the PGA Tour Policy Board.
The statement, which did not provide any details on the nature of Monahan’s condition, said: “The Board fully supports Jay and appreciates everyone’s respect for his privacy. During Jay’s absence, Ron Price, Chief Operating Officer, and Tyler Dennis, Executive Vice President and President of the PGA TOUR, will lead the day-to-day operations of the PGA Tour with the help of the great team Jay has built, ensuring smooth running. continuity.”
The tour said it would provide updates “as appropriate”.
For the past two years, Monahan, 53, has been a key figure in the middle of a turbulent period in professional golf, guiding the tour through a power struggle and heated legal clashes with LIV Golf.
Last week, after announcing a surprise deal with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which backs LIV, Monahan confronted his players in what he described as an “intense” and “heated” meeting at the Canadian Open. His Responsibility: Explaining to his membership why, after months of bitter fighting with LIV, it was time to partner with the league’s investors.
“I’m glad I wasn’t coming today,” former US Open winner Geoff Ogilvy told reporters after the meeting. “There are some angry players out there.”
Monahan has also drawn harsh criticism from 9/11 support groups in recent days for backing away from the tough moral stance he took against the Saudi-funded operation.
“I know people are going to call me a hypocrite,” Monahan told the media before the tournament. “Anytime I said anything, I said it with the information I had at that moment, and I said it based on someone trying to compete on the PGA Tour and the players.”
Monahan became commissioner for the tour in 2017. Prior to that, he held, among other roles in the organization, the position of deputy commissioner and chief of operations.
When contacted by GOLF.com, the tour said it had no further comment on Monahan’s condition.
