So, who wants to be a millionaire?
Patrick Meeks answered that question in a rush after he brutally knocked out Bellator MMA interim bantamweight champion Ravoen Stotts with a devastating knee in the first round of the Bellator 295 main event Saturday night at Neil S. Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu.
After choking Magomed Magomedov last December, Mix showed a few more layers in his bag after hitting a backhand with a left knee slamming to the chin 1:22 into the first round. With the shot, Mix captured the Bellator Bantamweight World Grand Prix title and the $1 million prize.
Mix (18-1) is arguably one of the best bantamweights on the planet after championship cruising. Serving Magomedov and Stots easily puts the 29-year-old on track for a date with fight winner Sergio Pettis-Patrico Freire on June 16.
In the co-main event, former Bellator women’s flyweight champion Elima Lee MacFarlane sets up a date with reigning champion Liz Carmouche after she outlasted Kana Watanabe in a three-round war by split decision (28-29, 29-28, 29-28).
Aaron Biko returned from a shoulder injury and loss to Jeremy Kennedy last October and cruised to a unanimous decision over James Gonzalez in their featherweight bout (30-27, 30-27, 30-27). Yancy Medeiros finished off a sliding quadruple rear naked choke on Charlie Leary in the first round.
In another move, Masayuki Kikweri pinned Alexei Å urkiewicz via KO (bench) in the second round of their welterweight bout. Shurkevich was the sharper striker throughout but felt Kikuriri’s strength early on before falling asleep with 27 seconds left in the second round. Bruna Ellen (7-4) looked the sharpest against Elara Juan, hitting the Brazilian with left hooks to move to a unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28). Jackson Wink MMA’s Davion Franklin (6-1) came back from his first career loss after making a decision on Kasem Aras. Franklin and Arras traded skins until the buzzer, but Franklin’s push in the third round was enough to get him back in pole for the win. Featherweights Mads Purnell and Kai Kamaka III defeated Justin Gonzalez and Adley Edwards respectively. Former Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Alon Cruz pulled away from a slow start to outlast Bobby King (30-27, 29-28, 29-28). Sumiko Inaba outlasted Vita Artega in three rounds (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) in the women’s flyweight move.
