Toronto’s core four do you think they’ll be back next year?
SDPN: Chris Johnston on how the four Toronto Maple Leafs forwards can all come back next season.
“What’s interesting to me is that Brendan Shanahan phoned all of the Leafs’ top players last week to share the news about Kyle Dupas and those players came out of those conversations believing it was Brendan Shanahan’s intention to bring the full four starting players back.
Now this is not written in stone and we obviously don’t know who the GM is. Maybe the new GM has a new perspective, has a different perspective on that.
But I think it’s interesting that as much as we’ve focused on the possibility of change, maybe even the need for change, these players think they’ll get back together. At least at this point in time.
I was a little surprised by that. I mean, just because there was a lot of talk, and obviously even Kyle Dubas opened the door at his last press conference on Monday, saying that everything would be on the table if he was running the team.
Well, Brendan Shanahan is the loudest voice in the hockey department, you know, I don’t know if he made assurances or promises, you know, we might get into the semantics here. But those players are certainly, I don’t think, getting ready to trade right now, even with a lot of speculation.
It just seems like they think the organization wants to move forward with them as a core four. So, that will be something to watch.”

“At least what I think happened behind the scenes is that Kyle Dupas made a push to get Brendan Shanahan out of hockey operations and decision-making. That he wanted complete and complete independence and that was a kind of power struggle that happened.
I mean, how else would you explain the reaction? When did you see details of this magnitude presented to you at a press conference?
Pure schedule, and even include things like, “Kyle emailed me and said he’d like to stay.” As if it blows him off even at the thought that he sent an email.
